Demonym – definition, example.

I was reading about India yesterday on Wikipedia and came across this word “Demonym” well this word was unheard to me till yesterday. But some little analysis helped me to understand what this is. You might think that this is a known word, but my case is a bit different so here I’m writing what I understood !

Demonym refers to  the name for a resident of a locality and is usually derived from the name of a locality. Even though I’m not a linguistic person, I’m guessing that this word originates from Demography.

Few Examples:

  • People of Gujarat are known as Gujarati. (Demonym->Gujarati)
  • Some small town, villages may not have a well established demonym for their people.

Well, this is my first post on English Language. I don’t know how much correct or wrong I am, but this is what I’ve understood.

So all the linguistic guys and girls out there, feel free to correct me !

Suggestions welcomed !
