Just like any other kid, I too had role model. The only difference was that I had role models in different areas – sports, politics, entertainment etc. On the sports front I enjoyed watching a lot of sports. Mainly focused on Cricket, I did enjoy watching speeding F1 cars, the cheeky goals, and the elegant forehand. Though I didn’t know much about the rules of the game apart from Cricket, I learnt them over time. There was that one sportsperson because of whom I followed the sport. Be it the fantastic Rahul Dravid, the speedster Michael Schumacher or the King of Court Roger Federer. Roger Federer has been the only reason I watched tennis.
Even today when I see Federer walk out on the court, I get goosebumps. Having watched him for so many years, I always want him to be on the winning side. Be it is powerful forehand or the elegant drop shot, I go up for everything. He’s the reason that I have followed the game for so many years and have understood the rules and the games. Earlier I remember, I had no idea how scoring was done, I meant suddenly from 0 to 15, then to 30, then to 40 😛 Nevertheless, with better understanding of the sport now, I’m able to analyze the game quite comfortably.
Many of you – especially #FedEx fans – would agree that the last few years have been quite dull for Federer. He has been playing good, but I guess the age is catching up on him. Most of the Grand Slams we have seen him bow out at the quarterfinals or the semi finals stage. Fresh and young legs are surely troubling the master, but you can never take away the finesse and the experience from the Legend. We as Federer fans, want him to make a comeback from the toughest of the situations and emerge victorious. And yesterday was one such match. Already down 2 sets to love, Federer showed the world just why he is the greatest Tennis player of all times, by not only saving 3 crucial match points, but eventually winning the match with the trademark Ace in the marathon 5 setter match.
Federer Magnificent Comebacks
The first one has got to be the one during the fourth round at the Australian Open 2009 edition where he was up against Tomas Berdych. Roger was 2 sets down reeling 4-6, 6-7 and was eyeing towards the exit. But just then things turned around for the best. Federer came back, with great returns, powerful Aces and amazing forehand winners to stun Berdych 6-4 in the 3rd set to eventually win the match 4-6,6-7,6-4,6-4,6-2.
Another great comeback comes from the 2012 French Open Quarter Final of 2012. Federer was up against Juan Martin del Potro who was in great touch. The match began with Federer losing the first set quiet cheaply – 3-6. The second set went to the tie breaker and again Fedex lost. However tables were turned in the third set and Federer took that one 6-2, and what followed was a carnage as the master beat del Potro 3-6,7-6,6-2,6-0,6-3 to enter the semis.
The last one and probably the best in the last two years has to be the one played yesterday against Marin Cilic at the Wimbledon 2016. Roger looked out of touch in the first 2 sets, with a poor return and an even poorer backhand. But the determined Roger, played some great tennis, showed his class and snatched the 3rd set. In the fourth, staring at yet another early exit, Federer silenced the critics and saved 3 crucial match points. Not only that, he eventually won the 4th set. Cilic on the other hand was losing out with poor shot selection and double faults. Federer put the final nail in the coffin by winning a crucial break point in the 5th set, to eventually seal the match with a magical Ace.
Federer has had a lot of highs and lows in his career. But he has been a true sportsman. The person with the highest number of grand slam wins at 307, just shows the zeal Roger – father of 4, 35 years old – has got. He is class apart and I’m sure all the Federer fans are hoping for the Legend to win his 8th Wimbledon this time around !
