Why Apollo and not Govt Hospital for Jayalalithaa ?

Today is one of those dark days in Indian Political history with the demise of Jayalalithaa, fondly known as Amma. Starting with a career in films, Jayalalithaa hit it off with some great movies in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and even Hindi ! At the age of 36, she became the youngest chief minister of Tamil Nadu and there was no turning back. One of the stalwart of Indian politics, Amma was surely the People’s Minister. Due to the prolonged illness and the sudden cardiac arrest, amma bowed out after battling for life along with the life support. Even though I haven’t stayed in Tamil Nadu, the sentiments clearly show what she meant for the masses. However, this post takes a different point of view and asks a very basic question – Why Apollo and not govt hospital for Jayalalithaa’s treatment ?

Why not a government hospital

Apollo Hospitals is surely one of the best chain of multi-specialty hospitals in the country. With presence in various cities, the hospital and certainly garnered people’s trust. They are probably the best in business, from pre-natal to critical care. In Chennai too, it has a large presence. However, it isn’t the only hospital in the city. There are other government hospitals in the city – Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Specialty Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Government hospital to name a few. So, with a presence of such specialty hospitals in the city, why a private hospital ? Just out of curiosity, a few points that I would like to put forth.

Treatment and Medical Care

Government Hospitals are ‘believed’ to be one of the best in the country. Run by the government, these hospitals ‘usually’ have some of the best medical treatments / devices in the country. They even have a lot of these services/devices at their disposal. What the private hospitals might be struggling to purchase, the government hospital can probably get that at ease. So on the treatment and medical care front, I don’t think a government hospital is less than any other private hospital.

Best Doctors in the country

The team of doctors at government hospitals are exceptionally skilled and are the brilliant minds in the country. These medicos have years of experience in their field. More often than not, a doctor might refer you to another one at a government hospital. Even in this case, media reports came in that specialist doctors were flown in from AIIMS, Delhi for the treatment. Well, everybody knows where to find some of the best doctors in the country !

Well, I do agree that a government hospital won’t give you the 5 star service that a private hospital does. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get the required treatment ! Is it that the people (read government officials) themselves have lost faith in their institutions ? Don’t they trust the treatment provided at a government hospital ? In my opinion, a government hospital should be the epitome of medical care in the country and AIIMS is one of the best examples. We certainly need to improve the condition of government hospitals and medical care in the country.

In no way, I’m trying to blame the government, hospital or the people of Tamil Nadu who have been trying their best to bring back our beloved Amma. The intention of this post is not to harm the sentiments of any specific person or a group. The post merely showcases my opinion and any harm to anyone from this post is purely unintentional.
