Government and Technology

It was today that i met a person who was from the CENSUS. I was amazed to see him hold a tablet and note down the details. Felt happy to see some advancement. (tablets replacing those huge sheets that were filled previously) Technology is everywhere and the government is trying to implement it everywhere. Be it booking a train ticket to availing a PAN card, almost all the government services have been made available online for easy access. It is something that is surely helping the government connect with the masses.

But the question is : Are these services actually effective ?
Well, my answer to this is NO. I surely praise the government for the efforts put in to techonologize various services but they still lack the infrastucture that is actually needed to sustain the services provided. For eg. the railway ticket booking service provided by IRCTC, is good but hardly works when you actually need it. Their servers cannot handle the massive traffic generated during the tatkal booking hours. Most of the times the session is timed-out and the payment is debited from your account without you getting the ticket.

To improve the above service, the government needs to spend and upgrade to servers that can handle large no. of requests and traffic. Also they should be able to utilize large bandwidths effectively.

Well, the government has lots of such services up and running but with lots of fault in it. One of the foremost requirement is to improve the infrastructure and quality of service provided. I certainly wouldn’t mind to shell out some extra bucks in exchange for error-free services. By keeping such things in mind, the government can overcome all the hurdles and have fool-proof services for one and all.
