Obtain Aadhaar card without local address proof

Aadhaar as most of us are aware is a 12 digit unique identity number provided to each resident of India. This is provided by UIDAI – Unique Identification Authority of India which is a Central Government Agency and works in tandem with the Niti Aayog (formerly the Planning Commission) with the objective of collecting biometric and demographic data of residents and store them in a centralized database and issue the Aadhaar Number. But the road to Aadhaar was not easy, marred by lot of opposition from various civic and political groups for concerns over privacy.

There has been a lot of confusion as to whether Aadhaar Card is acceptable as and Identity proof or not since many government authorities don’t accept Aadhaar card as a valid proof and for the same reason Honorable Supreme Court had to intervene and issue and interim order that “no person should suffer for not getting Aadhaar” and that government cannot deny a service to a resident if he/she doesn’t posses Aadhaar card.

Nevertheless, still there are many government services that ask for an Aadhaar Card. Obtaining an Aadhaar is an easy procedure. One has to have the following documents in hand to apply for an Aadhaar Card: Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, Proof of Date of Birth, Proof of Relationship. Refer to this link for full list of valid documents. Once these documents are ready, you can visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrollment center and provide your biometric data like fingerprint, iris scan and photo alongwith the documents. Upon successful registration you will be provided an Enrollment number and a registration confirmation receipt.

However there are many people (like me) who have been traveling a in various parts of the country and such people usually do not posses a local address proof. Also if someone is staying at a rented facility, they too might not have a local address proof for various reasons. So this post answers your query as to whether one can apply for an Aadhaar card without local address proof ? Well the answer is Yes, you can apply for an Aadhaar card without local address proof.

All you have to do is provide a Proof of Relationship document. This can be anything like a Birth Certificate, Passport, Class X/XII certificate or any other government approved ID proof which mentions the relation between you and your father / mother / husband / wife. And then provide the address proof of any one of the family member. This can be their Aadhaar card or any of the Proof of Address documents approved by the UIDAI. I had applied for an Aadhaar card a week ago and got it today.

Hope this post has answered your query as to whether one can apply for an Aadhaar card without local address proof ?
