Shiv Sagar Hyderabad Review: Authentic Mumbai Flavours

There’s a specific kind of craving that hits me every few months – the kind that only vada pav or a proper Pav Bhaji can fix. I grew up loving Mumbai street food, and every time I was in Mumbai, one meal was a standing appointment at a street stall with a plate of bhaji drowning in butter. The problem? Hyderabad, for all its food, has never quite nailed that Mumbai register. There are attempts. Most of them end in disappointment.

So when Shiv Sagar – the Mumbai institution- had opened an outlet in Madhapur, I didn’t need much convincing. I’d eaten at Shiv Sagar in Mumbai and Bangalore before. I knew what it could do. Having that same food without booking a flight felt almost too good to be true. Luckily, Shiv Sagar invited me to try the restaurant in one of its first weeks of launch – disclosing that upfront, as always – but opinions here are entirely my own.

Also, a great addition to the vegetarian restaurants in Hyderabad list!

Where to Find Shiv Sagar in Hyderabad

Shiv Sagar Madhapur sits right near the D-Mart on the Madhapur stretch. If you’re coming from the Gachibowli side, get off the Durgam Cheruvu flyover, take a right, and it’s at the corner – hard to miss once you’re looking. The restaurant is two floors. Not massive, but it seats a decent number of people, with solo seating on the ground floor and larger group seating upstairs.

Fair warning, though: from what I saw and what I’ve heard since, this place has been running at full capacity for most of its hours. So keep in mind the waiting time before you visit. The crowd on a weekday lunch was already telling a story – Hyderabad had been waiting for exactly this kind of place, and it showed.

Ambience: Functional, Familiar, Unpretentious

Don’t walk in expecting a café aesthetic or mood lighting. Shiv Sagar is a family restaurant in the most honest sense of that phrase – practical seating, clean, well-lit, and built for people who are there for the food. The upper floor has more room for groups; the ground level works well if you’re solo or in a pair.

Also, it may not be a place where you could sit and spend hours talking. Because there are just too many people waiting to get in, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to vacate. Happened to us! It’s the kind of place where the energy comes from the kitchen, not the interiors. Which, honestly, is exactly what it should be for this kind of food.

What We Ate: The Full Shiv Sagar Hyderabad Review

Desi Pizza

We opened with the Classic Desi Pizza, and this is one of those dishes where the name tells you everything you need to know. Hard crust – crunchy on the outside, just slightly soft inside – loaded with capsicum, tomatoes, onions, and a genuinely generous amount of cheese. No fusion pretension, no imported toppings. Just an unapologetically Desi take on the format, and I was completely here for it. The kind of thing that would be wrong to overthink.

Paneer Pav Bhaji

This is the dish I came for, and it did not let me down. PS: I wanted the classic Pav Bhaji, but the owner was like try the Paneer one.

The Paneer Pav Bhaji arrived exactly as it should – bhaji with the right colour, the right masala hit, butter pooling at the edges, and pavs that were embarrassingly fluffy and soaked through. I want to be precise here: this is the best Pav Bhaji I’ve had in Hyderabad in a long time. Possibly ever. The bhaji had that exact Mumbai profile – coarse, spiced right, not sweet, not watered down. And yes, the butter is not subtle. That’s the point.

If you go for nothing else, go for this. (And then probably order a second plate.)

Noodle Dosa

The Noodle Dosa was decent – a fun idea, executed reasonably well. A little spicy, though. But if I’m being honest, I’d rather order their Masala Dosa on a return visit (Nope, would still order just the Pav Bhaji, many great dosa places in Hyderabad already). They have a solid range of dosas on the menu, and the sambhar is noticeably different from Hyderabad’s usual style (lighter, slightly tangier). Something to be aware of if you’re used to the local version; something to appreciate if you want a change.

Tawa Pulao

Tawa Pulao was exactly what Mumbai tawa pulao should be – fiery, cooked on a flat tawa with vegetables and butter, the kind of dish that’s deceptively filling. A little on the spicier side, which I appreciated. If you’ve had tawa pulao from a Mumbai street cart, this will feel familiar. If you haven’t, this is a solid introduction.

Special Falooda

We ended with the Special Falooda, which arrived loaded with dry fruits, lots of colour, slightly on the sweeter side but genuinely flavourful. After a meal that heavy and that masaledar, something cold and sweet was the right call. It’s filling in its own right, so come prepared. They also have a solid range of milkshakes, and from what I was told, they bring in seasonal specials too – worth asking when you visit.

Is Shiv Sagar Hyderabad Worth Visiting?

The short answer: yes, without much hesitation. The Pav Bhaji alone justifies the trip. Everything else I tried ranged from good to very good, and pricing is reasonable enough that you won’t wince at the bill for what you get. The fact that the place has been packed since launch week isn’t an accident – Hyderabad has a real appetite for honest Mumbai street food done properly, and Shiv Sagar is delivering on that.

Just go early, or go prepared to wait. It’s worth it.

Who Should Go, Who Can Skip

  • Go if: You’re chasing proper Mumbai street food in Hyderabad – Pav Bhaji, Desi Pizza, Tawa Pulao, Falooda
  • Go if: You’re a vegetarian and want a full meal without having to navigate a menu that wasn’t built for you
  • Go if: You’ve been to Shiv Sagar in Mumbai and want to check whether this holds up (it largely does)
  • Skip: Why??

Verdict: 4/5. Genuinely recommended – especially for anyone who’s been missing real Bombay food in this city. Go hungry, bring a friend, and order the Pav Bhaji first.
