This year’s Australian Open is into its last stages. The women’s singles finished the semi-finals today, while men’s singles have some matches left in the quarter finals. Initially the grand slam was dull with mostly expected results pouring in. But there were many remarkable performances this season.
One of the player who deserves an ovation is Sloane Stephens. This young and energetic girl has surely made some news. Calls Serena Williams her mentor and role model, this young girl went on to beat Serena to move into the semi-finals. Serena was unlucky as her back troubled her but Stephens wasted no time and made Serena run around and finally win the match !
Another great(rather an epic) game was between Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka. The Serb was made to earn each and every point in the game. Wawrinka seemed like he had waged a war against the No.1. It was just the 4th round and the match went on for almost 5 hrs. Wawrinka left the crowd (and even his opponent) awestruck with this amazing serves and back hands. Well it could have been anyone’s match but Djokovic managed to hang in and win the match.
Even Fedex (if you don’t know who Fedex is, then you are reading something that is not meant for you !) was made to stretch every inch of his body to get past Tsonga. Yet again in a marathon match which lasted over 5 hrs. The first set itself set the tone for the rest of the match with Fedex winning the first set 7-6 and in the end he won 7-6,4-6,7-6,3-6,6-3 (woof that was too much to type, wonder how he managed to play that match)
Maria Sharapova who was playing her semi-final encounter against Li Na, was also handed a loss as she lost in straight sets. (Well it was great to see her play in the morning sipping a cup of coffee ;))
Well, the contest is surely heated up now. With Victoria Azarenka (my recent favorite :P) taking on Li Na in the singles final. While Djokovic will take on David Ferrer and Murray will take on Federer in the semi finals respectively. The coming few days in the Australian Open will certainly bring some top class tennis from some of the top class players.
And what about the results ? Well, I would say Azarenka would win the grand slam in the women’s category while the men’s will be a tough call. But Djokovic might pull off this one. (though I want Fedex to win !)
Let’s see what happens…
