Discover India – Ahmedabad

In my past 20 years of existence, I had the chance to visit many places, small and big, in India. So thought to write about all the places I’ve been till now. Will post about one place every week. So to start with the first place, I would like to start from Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad, the historical city of Gujarat is also known as the Manchester of India. Known as Amdavad by the Gujaratis. It is one of the largest city of the state and has all state-of-the-art facilities.

The city boasts a rich historical era. The Mughal emperor  – Ahmed Shah ruled the city for quite some time. During his reign, the city was walled and consists of twelve gates known as Darwajas or door. Ahmedabad was one of the place where the early Independence movement started. The famous Salt Satyagrah or Dandi March took place in this very state.

The city has developed a lot since then. With many multi-storey buildings and malls have engulfed the city. The city has many places that are ought to be on one’s Must-See places in Ahmedabad.

To start with Kankariya Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. It has many food joints around it. The lake is surrounded by a small amusement park and a zoological park.

Lal Darwaja is one of the twelve gates that were built during the Mughal Era.  The place is home to the city bus stand and the GPO. Another darwajas include Teen Darwaja, Delhi Darwaja and so on.

Sabarmati Ashram is a must visit place. Situated on the banks of river Sabarmati, this ashram is where Mahatma Gandhi stayed.

Akshardham Temple is located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The replica of this temple is situated in New Delhi. The temple is spread over a large area and serves the best Khichdi.

Sarkhej Gandhinagar Highway is the happening place in Ahmedabad. The place has developed from an empty land to the shopping place. Has many malls and restaurants. For shopping, Lal Darwaja, Sindhi Market – Maninagar, Raipur Darwaja, Relief Road are some places where you would find many things.

Some of the famous food joints and restaurants in the city are Honest, Sankalp, Govardhan Thad. The city is know for the snacks. Fafda Jalebi, Dhokla, Khaman, Bhajiya, Gota, Dabeli, Fulwadi, Gaathiya, Buff Vada, Patra, Khandvi to name a few (these are the most famous ones). The famous shops that serve these delicacies include Mehta, Jalaram.

Well, I have stayed there for quite some time and have enjoy a lot. You must have atleast 3-4 days in hand to enjoy Ahmedabad. You can reach Ahmedabad in following ways:

  • The city is well connected to New Delhi. It is about 900 kms. One can reach Ahmedabad by the New Delhi-Ahmedabad Rajdhani Express. The train runs daily and departs Delhi at 19 hrs and reaches Ahmedabad at 08 hrs.
  • The city is very close from Mumbai. One can reach Ahmedabad by Shatabdi or Karnavati Express from Mumbai. With a distance of almost 500kms, once can easily drive from Mumbai using NH-8. (NH 8 is one of the best high ways in the country.)

I hope you found this post helpful. I discussed some of the important land marks in the city and guess this would prove helpful for all of you planning to visit Ahmedabad !
