Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal – The Cleanliness Song

6 years ago the Swachh Bharat drive was announced on October 2nd, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. The objectives were quite clear – to eliminate open defecation, improve solid waste management, eradicating manual scavenging, and generating awareness about general cleanliness. Every city in India came up with ways to improve cleanliness and increase awareness. The one that I’m going to be talking about today is Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal. Wondering what this is? Read on to find out more about this.

One thing that I want to clear now itself is that this might have been going on for quite some time. However, I came to know about it just last week when I was in Lucknow. Being in Hyderabad for the last 5 years, I haven’t seen or heard anything like this and hence this completely blew my mind.

Garbage handling in various cities in India

But before I get into more details of this, let me talk about how garbage is handled in the cities I’ve stayed in. Over the years, the way local municipal authorities handle garbage has changed. Having hopped multiple cities in the last two decades, I’ve seen how various municipalities handle waste in their areas. Below are the cities I’ve stayed in and my memory about how the waste was collected:

Ahmedabad: We stayed in an apartment there, so every morning the person used to go door to door yelling “Kachro aapjo ba..” (Give the garbage ma’am) with a large bag where everyone used to throw their garbage. This was in the late 90s. I don’t know how it works there today.

Vadodara: The next place I spent a few years as a kid was Vadodara(Baroda). We stayed in Alembic Colony (staff quarters provided by Alembic Ltd) so things were pretty well there. We had a small courtyard outside each cottage and every morning we just kept the garbage bin out and a person with a cart would come and take it. This was in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Margao: I did stay a few years in Margao, Goa and that was the same time I was studying in New Era High School, Panchgani. So I used to be home only during vacations. From what I remember, there was a cart that came every morning and the person would blow a whistle. We just had to hand over the garbage bin and he would dump it in his cart.

Bengaluru: This was by far the most sophisticated garbage collection I had ever come across. This was around the year 2008-2010 when I stayed in Arekere. The first time I saw the segregation of waste done at that level. We had two different garbage bags at home – one for bio degradable waste and the other for normal waste. There was a small mini van sort of car that went about in our colony and collected waste.

Noida: In Noida, I was staying in an apartment complex in Sector 82. Being an Army welfare complex, things were well in place. We had a garbage collection person come in every morning and collect the waste. Something very similar to what I experienced in Ahmedabad a decade ago.

Hyderabad: In Hyderabad too, I’ve seen the GHMC car doing rounds every morning to collect waste. The person blows a whistle and we hand him the bin and he dumps it in his van and moves on.

What exactly is Gadi Wala Aaya Ghar Se Kachra Nikal?

To put it in simple words “Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal” translates to “Vehicle has come, get the garbage out of your house”. Now, when I was in Lucknow last week at my grandparent’s place, I heard this song “Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal” being played on a loudspeaker. I first thought it was some ad on the radio, but that kept on playing for a good hour or so. The next day when I went out to see what this was exactly and was surprised to see this.

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal – garbage pickup van in Lucknow

It was a garbage pickup van going around the society door to door collecting garbage. The van wasn’t a small one like those Tata Magic ones but was quite massive. This garbage van was playing this song “Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal” via a loudspeaker. It was just to tell the people that the vehicle has come and it’s time to get the garbage out of your house. The van also had waste segregation with separate bins for dry and wet waste. And there was a person who would take the garbage from every home and dump it into the van.

Concept of Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal

Indians are creative and there’s no doubt about it. We’ve come up with some iconic adverts, songs, and jingles in the past. Some of them that I’ve written about were the Aadhe Tere, Aadhe Mere advert by Olx, and one by Vodafone in 2013. This song “Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal” is another one that just sticks in your mind and it’s tough to get it out. Just like the IPL jingle a few years back “Dil Jumping Zapak Jumpak Jumpak“, this one too is pretty catchy.

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal lyrics are also bang-on and resonate well with the aam aadmi in large parts of India. The song is originally composed by Shyam Bairagi who is a teacher from Madhya Pradesh. When Shyam wrote the lyrics of Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal and gave it a voice, nobody thought that it would be a rage not only in India but abroad as well. The song is now used by many municipalities in the north for garbage collection.

Below are the lyrics of Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal in Hinglish. Further, the garbage pickup van didn’t play the complete song, it’s only when I researched more I learned it’s a complete song with simple lyrics. Dekh dekh dekh tu yhan whan na fek ..
Dekh dekh dekh tu yhan whan na fek ..
Dekh faile gi bimaari hoga sabka bura haal ..

Toh ka karien bhaiya?

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Gadi wala aya ghar se kachra nikal ..

Sun bhaiya sun behena ..
Merah ai ye kehena ..
Sabji ke chilke men ..
Katran jo fal ke hai ..

Ghar pe padi dhool dust ..
Humko deta bhaari kast ..
Poojan ke baad bachi raakh Fool paati ..
Kuch cheeje sadi gali bimaari laati ..

Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh maan bhi ja baat meri dekh yun na taal ..

Are toh ka karien bhaiya?

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Gadi wala aya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Kagaj ke tukde me ye apne dukhde ..

Plastic bekaar padi yun na polithin rakho ..
Ghar me dustbeen rakho 1 2 3 rakho ..
Kuch sookhekuch geele alag alag kachre rakho ..

Toote kanch keel apne ghar na khatre rakho ..
Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh khud ke tan ki karna hai kkhud ko dekh bhaal ..

Toh ka karien bhaiya?

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Gaadi vala aya ghar se kachra nikal ..

Naali me feo ge kachra to dekhoge ..
Naali ho gyi hai jam band hua sara kaam ..
Thaili hai durgand badboo se naak band ..
Machar bhi panpenge fir hamko kaatenge ..

Aur fir malaria ghar ghar me baaten ge ..
Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh dekh dekh kachra yun na kahin fek ..
Dekh aanchal failaya hun me kachra laake daal ..

To kahan feken kachra yar ?

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Gadi wala aya ghar se kachra nikal ..

Dekh dekh dekh tu yhan whan na fek ..
Dekh dekh dekh tu yhan whan na fek ..
Dekh faile gi bimaari hoga sabka bura haal ..

Gadi wala aaya ghar se kachra nikal ..
Gadi bala aya ghar se kachra nikal ..
