Hyderabad to Bangalore Road Trip 2025: Complete Guide and Experience

Been a while since I wrote anything there, thanks to KubeCon India that had kept me busy, more about it coming soon. And just after KubeCon was over, I drove from Hyderabad to Bengaluru.

Driving from Hyderabad to Bangalore is an exciting road trip that offers a blend of scenic landscapes, smooth highways, and interesting stops along the way. Having explored Coorg and Chikmagalur extensively by road, I was eager to finally take on the Hyderabad to Bangalore road trip, a journey I had previously only done by flight or train. Covering over 570 kilometers, this drive promises a mix of cultural sights, good food, and mostly well-maintained roads.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Hyderabad to Bangalore road trip in 2025 – from the route and road conditions to food stops, costs, and tips to make your journey comfortable and memorable.

Why Drive From Hyderabad to Bangalore?

If you’ve ever wondered whether to take the plunge and drive this popular South Indian route, here’s why I think it’s worth your time:

  • Diverse Landscapes: The drive takes you through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, offering a variety of terrains and cultural experiences – lots of lakes/waterbodies, mountains and scenic roads.
  • Straightforward Route: The journey mostly follows National Highway 44 (NH44), one of India’s longest and most upgraded highways, making navigation easier.
  • Flexibility: Unlike flights or trains, a road trip lets you stop when you want, explore hidden gems, and enjoy local food.
  • Scenic Views: The changing greenery, rustic towns, and occasional industrial landmarks like the Kia factory add visual interest.
  • Avoid Bangalore Traffic: Starting early in the morning helps you beat city congestion, especially in Bangalore.

The Route: NH44 From Hyderabad to Bangalore

The Hyderabad to Bangalore drive is delightfully straightforward, primarily sticking to NH44 for most of the journey.

Step-by-Step Route Overview:

1. Start from Hyderabad: Head towards the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
2. Take the Shamshabad Exit: This leads you towards Jadcherla.
3. Join NH44 at Jadcherla: From here, it’s a straight shot all the way to Bangalore.

This linear route simplifies navigation, but there are several interesting diversions and landmarks worth noting:

  • Tirupati Diversion (After Kurnool): If you have time for a spiritual detour, the exit to Tirupati is just after Kurnool. The Sri Venkateswara Temple is a renowned pilgrimage site, a peaceful stop if you want to break your journey.
  • Puttaparthi Diversion (After Anantapur): Another spiritual spot is Puttaparthi, home to the Sathya Sai Baba Ashram. It’s accessible via a short diversion and offers a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Lepakshi: Situated between Anantapur and Bangalore, Lepakshi is famous for its 16th-century Veerabhadra temple, adorned with exquisite frescoes and sculptures. It’s a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts – we did take a detour to Lepakshi during our return leg, more on this coming soon.
  • Kia Factory: Near Anantapur, you’ll notice the sprawling Kia Motors manufacturing plant – a striking contrast to the rural surroundings and a symbol of modern industry along the way. Also a couple of Korean eateries and stores around, if you’re interested.

Along the route, you’ll pass through several small towns and villages, perfect for quick chai breaks or stretching your legs.

Road Conditions: Mostly Smooth With Some Challenges

We began our journey at 5:30 AM to avoid Bangalore’s notorious traffic, a strategy I highly recommend. Early departures make a significant difference in travel time and stress levels.

What to Expect on the Road:

  • Good Quality Roads: NH44 is generally well-maintained with smooth tarmac, making long-distance driving comfortable.
  • Boothpur Stretch After Jadcherla: Unfortunately, this section has been under repair for nearly three years with little progress. It’s a narrow, uneven stretch leading to frequent traffic jams. Patience is essential here.
  • Flyover Construction at Multiple Places: Approaching Kurnool, and a couple of other cities ongoing flyover work can cause minor delays and roadblocks.
  • Speed Breakers in Karnataka: After crossing into Karnataka, be cautious of numerous speed breakers. Many are abrupt and poorly marked, posing potential hazards rather than preventing accidents. Slow down and stay alert.

Since our destination was Whitefield, Google Maps suggested a diversion just before Devanahalli. This new Outer Ring Road (ORR) bypassed usual congested routes, delivering us directly to Whitefield. The ORR is a welcome addition for those heading to eastern Bangalore suburbs, saving time and avoiding typical traffic snarls.

Food Stops Along the Hyderabad to Bangalore Highway

One of the joys of road trips is exploring local eateries and roadside gems. Here are some great food stops we tried or noted on this route:

  • Food Pyramid, Near Kothakuta: A fantastic pitstop offering a multi-cuisine menu with both South and North Indian dishes. The ambiance is clean and welcoming, perfect for a quick meal or snack break.
  • A2B (Adyar Ananda Bhavan), Near Kia Factory: A popular pure vegetarian chain known for consistent quality South Indian meals and thalis. It tends to get crowded during lunch hours, so plan accordingly. The dosa and idli varieties are especially good here.
  • BigBay India, Near Chikballapur: This modern food court features Starbucks, Haldiram’s, and other popular chains. It’s ideal for coffee, quick snacks, or sweets, with a clean and comfortable environment to relax during your drive.
  • Kritunga, Kurnool: For lovers of spicy, non-vegetarian Andhra cuisine, Kritunga is a solid choice. We stopped here on the way back, and while the food was flavorful, it was quite spicy – so be prepared if you’re sensitive to heat. The ambiance is simple but cozy.
