New Car Registration in Hyderabad – Complete Guide

You might already know that I’ve recently purchased a new car – Tata Punch. It is my first car and the whole purchasing process was quite new to me. It was a huge learning curve. I in fact shared details about how to choose a car, budget, finances, pre-delivery inspection and everything else that I learned in two blog posts

While the car is home, there are a lot of things that are required and happen after you’ve brought it. And one of the foremost and most important things is to get your car registered. In India, all new vehicles need to be registered with the transport authority of your area. I got my new car registration in

In this blog post, I’ll share the complete guide to new car registration in Hyderabad. If you’re purchasing a new vehicle, this guide will be helpful to you.

Understanding Registration Numbers

Your dealer can deliver your car either with a permanent registration number or a temporary one.

The temporary number is valid for a period of one month from the sale of the vehicle. Usually, you’ll find these yellow number plates with ‘TR’ number on them. My car Punch too had a temporary number provided. You can drive your vehicle all across India with the TR number along with valid car insurance.

In the case of a permanent number, you’ll get a white number plate with the registered number. This is when you’ll also get a registration certificate or RC book as it is called. Some states give you a piece of paper while others have this smart card. This is the most important document that is required to drive a car in India. Even when you plan to sell your old car, you’ll need to have a valid RC book.

If you got a new car with a temporary number, you’ll have to get your new car registration done within the one-month time frame. You’ll head to your nearest regional transport office (RTO) office and get it registered. I experienced this process a few days back and let’s continue to the new car registration in Hyderabad.

Note: Some states allow you to reserve numbers in advance or choose fancy numbers by paying a premium. Please check your RTO’s website for more details. For Telangana, the process is simple. There’s a daily list of numbers updated on RTO’s website. From which you can choose, and make the payment.

New Car Registration in Hyderabad – Requirements

One of the best things about new car registration in Hyderabad is that the entire process is online – at least the slot booking part. I’ll talk about it more in the later section. Before you even proceed to get your new car registered in Hyderabad, there is a set of documents that are mandatory requirements by the RTO.

Let’s look into the documents that are required for new car registration in Hyderabad.

  • Form 20 – particulars of the car, can be filled online
  • Sales certificate Form 21
  • Road worthiness certificate in Form 22 from the manufacturer
  • Valid Insurance
  • Address Proof
  • Identity Proof

Most of the time, your dealer will refer you to an agent who can get all of this done. In such cases, you need to pay an extra amount to the agent. The dealer will pass on all these documents to the agent and you can coordinate with the agent for further processing.

Do note that you can do this entire process on your own without the help of an agent. You need to request your dealer to share all those documents with you for the same. Because it requires additional effort, most people opt for an agent. I’ve seen that agents usually charge anywhere around Rs 2000 for new car registration in Hyderabad.

Process of New Car Registration in Hyderabad

For ease of understanding, I’ll break the process of new car registration in Hyderabad into two phases:

  • Online
  • At RTO

Online Process

After receiving all the documents, you can proceed to perform the necessary steps to register your new car. Remember that if you have opted for an agent to get this done, then you don’t need to do anything. Below are the steps that you need to follow for new car registration in Hyderabad.

You first need to book a slot for new car registration. Visit the Telangana RTO website, select online services and choose New Vehicle Registration.

  • Provide details like your temporary registration number, and chassis/engine number and proceed.
  • On the next screen, fill out the form with the required details and choose the slot for your nearest RTO.
  • Print form 20.
  • Attach the other documents – Form 21, Form 22, Insurance, Address and Id proof

At this point, your entire document docket is ready for new car registration in Hyderabad.

At RTO

The next step is to visit the RTO office where your car needs to be registered. This depends on the address where the car is being delivered. Depending upon the district size and the state, you’ll have to visit a certain RTO office.

New Car Registration
New Car Registration – vehicle inspection RTO Ibrahimpatnam.

In my case, it was RTO Ibrahimpatnam. Further, the steps mentioned below are based on how things were at RTO Ibrahimpatnam.

  • Visit the new car registration counter and show them the document.
  • Pay the registration fee of ~ Rs 1200 at the counter, you’ll get a receipt.
  • Visit another counter with this receipt, get your photo clicked and provide your digital signature. This is required for RC book creation in Telangana.
  • Once done, you need to get the physical verification done for your car. There will be a dedicated area where you need to take the car and get it verified by a transport official.
  • Here, you need to match the chassis and engine numbers. You also need to take an imprint of the chassis number on form 20.
  • After the inspection is complete, visit the counter and share the complete document.

At this point, you are done with your work at the RTO. As mentioned, the whole process can be different in different states. I’ve mentioned, how it worked for me here in Hyderabad.

Post Registration of New Car

After you have completed all the formalities of new car registration in Hyderabad, the next step is to wait. You don’t get your permanent registration number instantly. One thing to know is that there are regular and fancy numbers. Most of the fancy numbers are priced at a premium and you are allotted one almost instantly.

Below are the things to note and a list of activities that need to be done after you’ve completed the new car registration formalities.

  • For regular numbers, it takes about 24 hours for the number to be allotted. This can be validated on the RTO website by providing the application number.
  • As per Govt. Of India directive, all new cars must have High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) these specially designed number plates are to be provided by the manufacturer to the dealer. The dealer will fix this onto the new car without any additional cost. More about HSRP.
  • Keep the registration receipt safely until you have the final number plate. In case you are stopped by the cops, you can show this to them and prove that you’ve done the registration and are waiting for the number plate to come.
  • Further, the Registration certificate or RC book is not provided immediately. It takes about 45 days for the RC book to reach the address mentioned by you while registering the car.
  • Apply for Fast Tag. Most of the dealers today provide you with a fast tag. However, if you’re having a TR number and have paid for the fast tag, you’ll have to visit the dealer to get one fixed.

New Car Registration In Hyderabad

That’s about new car registration in the Hyderabad guide based on my experience. You might also have a similar experience based on the RTO you’re in. Having said that, the queue at RTA Ibrahimpatnam was pretty quick and didn’t have to spend much time. While doing it yourself is what I’ll suggest, you can prefer an agent who can do all this for you, for a nominal fee.

That’s about it in this post on registering new cars in Hyderabad. Do share your thoughts, feedback, and issues in the comments below, tweet to me at @Atulmaharaj, DM on Instagram or Get In Touch.
